Submission by the Argentine Foreign Ministry to the Venice Biennale

14 May 2017
Información para la Prensa N°:
183/17

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Argentine Republic, through the National Directorate of Cultural Affairs and the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in Italy, will present its official submission to the 57th International Art Exhibition, the Venice Biennale, next Friday 12 May.

The inauguration, which will be attended by Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra, will take place in the Argentine pavilion in the Venetian Arsenal. This event is a significant opportunity to spread our culture abroad and to consolidate the importance of Argentine art in the international arena, renowned for the quality of our artists.

This time, a sculpture entitled “The Horse’s Problem” crafted by Argentine visual artist Claudia Fontes will be presented. The choice is the result of a careful selection by an evaluation committee composed of important curators with vast experience in our country, such as Adriana Rosenberg, Mercedes Casanegra, Inés Katzenstein, María Teresa Constantín, Rodrigo Alonso, Fabián Lebenglik, Fernando Farina and Américo Castilla, as well as the Director of Cultural Affairs of the Argentine Foreign Ministry, Mauricio Wainrot. On this occasion, the curator of the Argentine submission is architect Andrés Duprat, Director of the National Museum of Fine Arts.

“The Horse’s Problem” questions the role of the spectator and is inspired in Argentine traditional figurative art. It encourages reflection on the conflicts that have formed our identity from a contemporary perspective.

This work of art is in line with the vision of this new edition of the Biennale, whose curator is Christine Macel, under the slogan “Viva Arte Viva”, which focuses on art and the position of artists in a world “full of conflict and commotion”. It interprets art as a witness, a questioner and an expression of life lessons, experiences and the search for freedom, at both the individual and global levels.

The 57th International Art Exhibition, the Venice Biennale, will be held from 10 May to 26 November 2017.
