The Argentine Republic welcomes the Joint Statement given yesterday by the Republic of Mauritius and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on the agreement between both countries, by which the United Kingdom recognizes the sovereignty of Mauritius over the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego García.

In line with what was stated in said Joint Statement, the Argentine Republic wishes to express its satisfaction with the commitment demonstrated by both parties to diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of disputes, adherence to international law and respect for the principles of sovereign equality of States, sovereignty and territorial integrity. This commitment has made it possible to resolve all outstanding issues between both parties concerning the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego García, after two years of constructive negotiations based on mutual respect.

This is a historic event in the process of decolonization, which ratifies the importance of dialogue, diplomatic negotiations, and peaceful means of resolving disputes between countries, and to which our own country contributed through its participation in the Advisory Opinion that the International Court of Justice issued in this regard.

Argentina sees this agreement as an encouraging example to continue working towards a serious and constructive dialogue with the United Kingdom, with the aim of building the necessary trust to resume negotiations on the sovereignty over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas in accordance with United Nations General Assembly resolution 2065 (XX).
