A coordination meeting between several business chambers and authorities of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs was held today at the Palacio San Martín with the focus on the upcoming Business 20 (B20) Summit under Germany’s G20 Presidency 2017 and its organization under Argentina’s Presidency 2018. The meeting was convened by Ambassador Beatriz Nofal, the Argentine Sherpa for the G20, and provided a framework to welcome the recent appointment by President Mauricio Macri of Daniel Funes de Rioja, Vice-president of the Argentine Industrial Union (UIA in the Spanish acronym), as chair of the B20 in 2018.
On the Argentine Foreign Ministry’s side, the meeting was attended by the Deputy Foreign Minister, Ambassador Pedro Villagra Delgado; the Undersecretary for Trade Promotion and Investment Development, Minister Marcelo Lucco; the Argentine Sous-Sherpa for the G20, Minister Mauricio Alice; and on the business sector’s side by Adrián Kaufmann, President of the UIA; Jorge Di Fiori, President of the Argentine Chamber of Commerce; Daniel Peregrina, Vice-president of the Argentine Rural Society; Gustavo Weiss, President of the Argentine Chamber of Construction; Norberto Peruzzotti, Executive Director of the Argentine Banks Association (ADEBA in Spanish); Adelmo Gabbi, President of the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange; and Jorge Mandelbaum, President of the Center for the Implementation of Public Policies for Equity and Growth (CIPPEC in Spanish).
The Business 20 is one of the G20 groups for engagement with civil society. It is a participation and dialogue platform of the global business sector community to analyze and design global economic governance policies that are then informed in the G20 process.
As regards the organization of the B20 for next year, Ambassador Beatriz Nofal underscored that the aim is to obtain a broad participation of several business chambers of federal scope, including organizations that comprise SMEs. With respect to the work agenda, the current affairs in 2017 were reviewed: energy, climate and resource efficiency; financing for growth and infrastructure; digitalization; work and education; anti-corruption and responsible behaviour of businesses and SMEs.
With the focus on Argentina’s Presidency 2018, Ambassador Nofal underscored that it would be very important to also include agriculture and agro-industry within the topics for the B20.
