Today, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie and Korean Ambassador Lim Ki-mo signed two agreements at the Palacio San Martín, prior to the upcoming visit of Korean President Moon Jae-in who will hold a bilateral meeting with President Mauricio Macri during the G20 Summit.
The Agreement on Social Security allows workers who have carried out remunerated activities in Argentina and Korea to totalize coverage periods in both countries and receive social security benefits. Detached workers in Argentina or Korea may still make social security contributions to their country of origin, preventing the interruption of contributions, which favours the expansion or establishment of Argentine and Korean companies in the territory of the other State. The Agreement guarantees social security protection for migrant workers from Argentina and Korea, a very topical matter and one of high importance in G20 debates on the future of work.
On the other hand, the Agreement on Working Holidays affords –through a system to facilitate the issuance of visas– new opportunities to young Argentines and Koreans between the ages of 18 and 30 wishing to holiday and work in the other country for a year. The Agreement also provides for an annual quota of 200 visas for applicants from both countries.
Since 2015, the Argentine Republic has signed thirteen agreements of this kind with various countries, within the framework of a foreign policy aimed at strengthening links and social and cultural relations with foreign countries.
