On Friday 10 May, the 1st Meeting of the Binational Committee on Antarctic Cooperation was held, headed by the Foreign Ministry’s Secretary for Malvinas, Antarctica, Ocean Policy and the South Atlantic, Ambassador Paola Iris Di Chiaro, and the Secretary of Multilateral Political Affairs of Brazil’s Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Carlos Márcio Bicalho Cozendey.

The Binational Committee on Antarctic Cooperation is a mechanism that will make it possible to develop cooperation in Antarctic matters more systematically. Both countries have a long tradition of collaboration and share interests in these fields.

During the meeting, the participants exchanged their views on the main topics to be dealt with at the next Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, which will take place from 20 to 30 May in Kochi, India. In addition, they analyzed the most relevant topics within other fora of the Antarctic Treaty System—such as the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources—and discussed the consolidation and strengthening of the existing scientific and logistic cooperation between both countries.
