The Argentine Deputy Foreign Minister, Ambassador Gustavo Zlauvinen, and the Peruvian Deputy Foreign Minister, Ambassador Jaime A. Pomareda Montenegro, presided over the 4th Meeting of the Subcommittee of Political Affairs, during which they addressed key bilateral, regional and multilateral issues of shared interest.
The Deputy Foreign Ministers announced the establishment of a Joint Committee on natural disasters, and organized an upcoming meeting of the Subcommittee of Economic and Financial Affairs and a Multilateral Consultations meeting, as well as preparatory meetings for the 1st Social Cabinet Meeting.
They also agreed on strengthening cooperation in the field of Antarctic policy through greater and more effective consensus in organizations that deal with the subject, and they reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in issues such as education, the fight against drug trafficking and related crimes, the promotion of human rights, human trafficking and the environment.
They welcomed the fact that the 2015-2018 Programme on Bilateral Cooperation was fully and successfully completed, and they held a video conference with the Working Group on the Bicentenary of Peruvian Independence, in which joint activities were agreed on, such as ceremonies commemorating San Martin's campaign and events to reflect on the bilateral history, among other activities.
The Foreign Ministers also agreed on holding these meetings:
- The 5th Meeting of the Joint Committee on Prevention of Drug Abuse and Control of Illicit Traffic of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, in Buenos Aires, on 24-25 June.
- The 6th Meeting of the Joint Committee on Technical, Scientific and Technological Cooperation, in Buenos Aires, in August 2019.
The 6th Meeting of the Permanent Committee on Defence and Security Coordination was also held, which was attended by the Peruvian Deputy Minister of Defence Affairs, Divisional General Hernán Flores, the Secretary for Military Strategy and Affairs, Paola di Chiaro, and the Argentine Ambassador to Peru, Jorge Yoma.
At the meeting, they discussed the regional and global situation and different areas of cooperation, such as science, technology and investigation, the defence industry, disaster risk management and SAR, and education and teaching, including instruction and training.
In addition, they underscored the importance of cooperating and exchanging ideas in multilateral forums and initiatives in cyberdefence.
The bonds of brotherhood between both countries since their independence were highlighted, and the Argentine delegation expressed its willingness to participate in the celebrations of the Bicentenary of Peruvian Independence with specific cooperation projects in different areas.
