President Jair Bolsonaro received the President of the Argentine Republic, Mauricio Macri, during his working visit to the city of Brasilia on 16 January 2019.
After sectoral ministerial meetings, President Bolsonaro met with President Macri and later they headed a ministerial meeting together.
The Presidents underscored the importance of this first visit by a foreign leader to Brazil since President Jair Bolsonaro took office, which proves that both countries assign great priority to each other.
The Presidents had their first discussion of matters of shared interest at the bilateral, regional and international level.
As regards issues on the bilateral agenda, the Presidents agreed to work together with a view to achieving specific short-term goals in various areas with great potential. Among the priorities, they addressed internal and regional security, the enhancement of bilateral instruments on legal cooperation and the fight against transnational crime and corruption, efficient and systematic resolution of trade and investment issues, regulatory convergence, trade facilitation, facilitation of tourist travel, consular cooperation, technological and industrial cooperation in the defence, nuclear, space and satellite sectors, physical infrastructure, connectivity (including air connectivity) between both countries, science, technology and innovation, renewable and non-renewable energy sources, energy integration, cooperation between Armed Forces (including preparation for UN peacekeeping missions), health, education and teaching of Portuguese and Spanish, among others.
We welcome the signing of the new Bilateral Extradition Treaty, which will enhance the legal cooperation framework between Argentina and Brazil.
As regards Mercosur, the Presidents agreed to work during their consecutive Pro Tempore Presidencies in 2019 in order to review the Common External Tariff, improve market access and make progress on trade facilitation and regulatory convergence. At the international level, they agreed to foster the most promising ongoing negotiations and consider the beginning of new negotiations with other partners.
President Bolsonaro accepted President Macri's invitation to pay a State Visit to the Argentine Republic on a date yet to be set through diplomatic channels.
