The Argentine Foreign Ministry is pleased to inform that the Argentine Delegation to the Administrative Commission of the Rio de la Plata approved today the project for the widening and deepening of the Montevideo Port Access Channel to 14 metres.

It is worth mentioning that this is possible thanks to the joint technical work carried out by the Argentine and the Uruguayan Delegations, based on a faithful observance of the Treaty between Uruguay and Argentina concerning the Rio de la Plata and the Corresponding Maritime Boundary, which preserves the essential minimum requirements to ensure the safety of navigation in the area.

Likewise, the Argentine government hopes that, in the future, the projects presented in relation to the waters shared by both countries, within the scope of Article 17 and subsequent Articles of the Treaty, will receive an agile and expeditious evaluation, within the framework of the strengthening of the relations of friendship, cooperation and integration between both countries. To this end, the government plans to propose to Uruguay the drafting of a protocol or mechanism to speed up the procedures for analyzing this type of projects within the Commission.

Finally, we consider that any project to be developed should conceive the Rio de la Plata and its navigation channels as a true integral system, seeking to achieve similar dimensions, particularly in navigable depths and widths. This will contribute to the development of both countries and to the economic well-being of their citizens. It will also benefit the users of our waterways and reduce logistical costs, with a view to making our exports increasingly competitive.
