On 8 August, the Manuel Belgrano Auditorium of the Foreign Ministry hosted a ceremony to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the creation of ASEAN
The Argentine Deputy Foreign Minister, Daniel Raimondi, and the Malaysian Ambassador to Argentina, Dato' Mohd Khalid Abbasi Bin Abdul Razak -who is chairing the ASEAN Ambassadors group in Buenos Aires,- today presided over the ceremony to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the creation of the Association of Southeast Nations, established in 1967.
During the ceremony, which was attended by national authorities, diplomatic corps, businesspeople, academics, journalists and sports people, the Argentine Deputy Foreign Minister congratulated "the Association on the path of success it has pursued" and stated that "ASEAN is one of the most fruitful experiences of dynamic growth and is expected to become the fifth largest economy in the world by 2020."
Raimondi also underscored Argentina's recent accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), which marks a new stage in the development of ties between Argentina and ASEAN members.
"We welcome the kind invitation for Argentina to participate in the 51st Foreign Ministers' Meeting of ASEAN, held in Singapore on 2 August, on which occasion Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie signed Argentina's accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC)," Raimondi stated.
ASEAN is comprised of Brunei, Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. It currently accounts for over 650 million people and for 7% of global exports and 6% of global imports. In 2017, trade between Argentina and ASEAN totalled USD 7.8 billion.
