Deputy Foreign Minister Leopoldo Sahores participated in the Human Rights Council High Level Segment held in Geneva and highlighted the role of the Council in responding to the major challenges and human rights violations in the different regions of the world.
Two years after Russia began its aggression against Ukraine, he reiterated Argentina’s condemnation of the invasion and its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity. With respect to the serious human rights situation in Nicaragua and Venezuela, he noted that Argentina has recently rejoined the group proposing a solution to the human rights situation in both countries.
The Deputy Foreign Minister condemned international terrorism and expressed solidarity towards States suffering its consequences. He reiterated the condemnation of the terrorist attack on the Israeli Embassy to Buenos Aires and the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA), and demanded the Government of Iran "to fully cooperate with the Argentine Judiciary so that the individuals who have been accused of participating in the brutal AMIA bombing can be prosecuted by the competent courts."
In addition, he stated that Argentina has strongly condemned the terrorist attack conducted by Hamas on 7 October and acknowledges Israel's right of self-defence. Likewise, he expressed deep concern about the situation in Gaza and urged respect for international human rights law and international humanitarian law in the current conflict, especially the obligation to protect the civilian population in armed conflicts.
Argentina is actively participating in the 55th session of the Human Rights Council, which commenced on 26 February and will end on 5 April 2024.
