The First Meeting of the Argentina - Chile Bilateral Committee on Southern Marine Scientific Research Cooperation was held today at the Palacio San Martín.
During the meeting, the delegations of the two countries agreed on the make-up of the Committee -which is comprised of public institutions representing the two countries-, the territorial scope of the Committee's activities, the basic guidelines for the operation of the Committee and the upcoming meetings schedule. The delegations also exchanged views on issues of shared scientific interest and especially made progress on the project to launch a joint scientific voyage through the Beagle Channel.
The joint work in marine scientific research will contribute to a better understanding of biodiversity and biological processes in the Southern area and, on the basis of such knowledge, to finding the most efficient ways of preserving the marine environment for future generations.
The Argentine delegation was comprised of representatives of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Worship, the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands, the Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development, the Secretariat for Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development, the Naval Hydrographic Service, the Southern Centre for Scientific Research (CADIC) and the National Parks Administration.
The Chilean delegation was comprised of representatives of the Foreign Ministry and the Embassy in Buenos Aires, the Navy, the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP), the Ministry of Environment, the National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research and the Millennium Science Initiative Programme of the Ministry of Economy.
