Today, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie met with the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation, Christopher A. Ford
During the meeting, they highlighted the cooperation relationship between Argentina and the United States in the field of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Examples of that cooperation are the Plenary Meeting of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism (GICNT), which will be held this week in Buenos Aires and will be attended by more than 55 delegations and 190 representatives of member countries; and the Regional Workshop in the context of the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), jointly organized by Argentina and the United States, which will be held in Buenos Aires on 11-13 June.
In addition, Foreign Minister Faurie and Assistant Secretary Ford addressed issues on the bilateral and multilateral agenda in relation to non-proliferation and cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy. In this regard, they highlighted the appointment of Ambassador Rafael Rossi as Chair of the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which will be held in New York, in April 2020.
As regards nuclear issues, Argentina and the United States have a bilateral relationship based on technical cooperation and permanent dialogue, its main mechanism being the Joint Standing Committee on Nuclear Energy Cooperation (JSCNEC), which has met uninterruptedly since 2004.
