Today, Foreign Minister Diana Mondino received U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, who is visiting Argentina.
The meeting with Rubio is part of the ongoing meetings with high-level officials from the U.S. Executive Branch and Congress, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and exchanging perspectives on national, regional, and global issues.
The meeting provided insight into Senator Rubio’s views on various topics of mutual interest shaping the bilateral relationship, including the promotion of democracy and economic growth, migration, and security challenges.
In turn, Foreign Minister Mondino shared Argentina’s main challenges and the mechanisms and instruments that the Government is adopting for addressing them, with a view to removing economic distortions and achieving macroeconomic stability and rapid integration into the international arena.
In this regard, Mondino referred to the new Government’s efforts within the framework of the FATF and the OECD accession, and addressed IMF surcharges and their effects on our country, as well as the major significance of opening new markets for Argentina.
The officials also discussed the regional situation. They agreed on deepening joint efforts at multilateral fora such as the Organization of American States (OAS) and highlighted the need to strengthen the historical role of this forum in defending democracy and promoting and protecting human rights, as well as in security and development matters.
Finally, Mondino and Rubio discussed the lack of clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of Russian opposition political leader Alexei Navalny, and agreed on the need for the authorities of the Russian Federation to conduct an investigation that sheds light on what happened.
