Deputy Foreign Minister Leopoldo Sahores welcomed a delegation from the European Space Agency (ESA) led by Mr. Eric Morel de Westgaver, Director of European, Legal, and International Matters.
The meeting provided an opportunity to review the historical ties of bilateral cooperation in space matters, the best example of which is ESA's Deep Space Antenna DSA 3 in the city of Malargüe, Province of Mendoza. During the meeting, the officials also reaffirmed their common interest in continuing to deepen joint work. Within this context, the upcoming visit of Argentine authorities to the DSA 3 station was discussed.
Later, the ESA delegation held meetings with officials from the Directorate for International Security and Nuclear and Space Affairs; the National Directorate for Antarctic Foreign Policy; the South Atlantic Ocean Policy Coordination Unit; and the Argentine Antarctic Institute.
These bilateral cooperation activities are carried out under the Agreement between the Government of the Argentine Republic and the European Space Agency on Space Cooperation for Peaceful Purposes, entered into on 11 March 2002 and renewed on 25 August 2023 for a 10-year term.
Established in 1975, ESA is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to coordinating Europe's space capabilities. In this context, it develops the launchers, satellites and the necessary ground infrastructure to keep Europe at the forefront of space activities. Currently, it is made up of 22 Member States.
