The closing ceremony of the Honey Week, organized by the Secretariat of Bioeconomy, was held on 20 May, at Palacio San Martín. This event took place on World Bee Day, established by the UN General Assembly in 2017, and is one of many actions carried out by the Foreign Ministry to promote Argentina’s exports and foreign productive investments in our country.
The purpose of the event was to raise awareness on the importance of beekeeping and the role of bees as pollinators in food production and as preservers of biodiversity. The Honey Week is a private-public action that has been growing year after year, and its goal is to position honey and its by-products in the domestic market, make these products known and increase the potential of selling fractionated honey and various apiculture products abroad.
The event was attended by representatives of Foreign Embassies accredited to our country, national and provincial authorities, and representatives of the Argentine Beekeepers' Association (SADA) and of companies and other actors in the sector, including 16 companies that are part of the honey production chain and presented the sector’s exportable supply: Melnox, González Mauricio, Citadini, Gruas San Blas, Marplast, Cafran, El Dinamarqués, Asociación de Criadores de Abejas Reinas, Fabde Materiales Apícolas Navarro, Sada, FECOAPI, Beeflow, Gerfer, Quiero Miel, Néctar de los Dioses and Greif.
The Undersecretary for the Promotion of Exports, Investments, Education, Science and Culture, Ramiro Velloso, highlighted that Argentina is the third top honey exporter and fourth top producer in the world. Argentina exports over 92% of its total honey production, while the remaining 8% goes to the domestic market. In 2023, Argentina’s exports of honey reached USD 183 million.
For his part, the Undersecretary of Agrifood Markets and International Negotiations of the Secretary of Bioeconomy, Agustín Tejeda, stressed that apiculture is a federal activity, as there are over 20,000 beekeepers that produce and sell various high-quality types of honey to the world.
Agronomist Flavia Vázquez, an official from the Undersecretariat of Agrifood Markets and International Negotiations of the Secretary of Bioeconomy, organized a honey tasting experience at the event, where different types of honey produced in various regions of our country were sampled.
