Today, 10 September 2024, Argentina's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Carlos Foradori, made a statement at the Human Rights Council to convey Argentina's deep concern over the severe human rights crisis in Nicaragua.
The statement was made by the Argentine representative on behalf of the Core Group on Human Rights in Nicaragua within the Human Rights Council, made up of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru.
During her speech, Ambassador Foradori mentioned the findings of the successive reports by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights documenting the deteriorating human rights situation in Nicaragua since 2018, including systematic violations of basic due process protections; arbitrary detentions of human rights defenders, opposition leaders, journalists and people related to the Catholic Church and other religious groups, including the Evangelical Church; inhumane prison conditions; cancellation of the legal status of over 3,200 civil society organizations in less than a year; closing of media outlets; and harsher control over the Judiciary to subject the people to systematic repression.
In addition, Nicaragua is deporting political prisoners and dissidents, revoking their citizenship and confiscating their property, which constitutes a violation of their fundamental human rights and international law.
Ambassador Foradori once again urged the Government of Nicaragua to release all individuals that have been arbitrarily detained, to allow communications with and visits from attorneys and relatives to all detainees and to restore the rights of all those who have been stripped of their nationality.
Finally, Argentina urges Nicaragua to fully cooperate and allow the staff from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner and other mechanisms of the Human Rights Council, including the Group of Experts, to enter the country and perform their tasks.
