This afternoon, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie, joined by human rights, consular and legal officials from the Foreign Ministry, met with Víctor Saldaño's mother, Ms. Lidia Guerrero, and her legal counsel before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Dr. Juan Carlos Vega.

At the meeting, information was shared on the current status of the case, which, after the second trial, will be brought before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Argentina is taking steps to provide support for the Court to admit the case in order to commute Saldaño's sentence, in accordance with the recommendations given by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

For over 20 years and over the course of successive administrations, the Foreign Ministry has provided support through political and judicial measures before U.S. courts and the IACHR, and consular assistance to Saldaño and his family.

The Argentine Government is following this sensitive issue with concern, given that Saldaño has been held on death row ever since death penalty was imposed, and such punishment is not recognized by the Argentine Government, which is working at an international level towards its abolition.
