Information for the Press N°:
296/19

On 17-18 July 2019, the Scientific Sub-committee of the South Atlantic Fisheries Commission (SAFC), established pursuant to the Joint Declaration of 28 November 1990, met in Buenos Aires. The meeting was attended by scientists and officials from the Argentine Republic and from the United Kingdom.

Both delegations addressed issues of mutual interest in the field of scientific cooperation for the preservation of fishery resources in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

Discussions centred on the assessment of activities which have already been implemented, such as the mechanism for the exchange of scientific data established in December 2018 and the joint scientific voyage to study squid which took place this year in February.  In addition, the technical details of the scientific voyage to study the southern blue whiting in September 2019 were finalized.

Both delegations agreed to hold the next meeting in Buenos Aires in November 2019.

Both the meeting and its outcome are covered under the sovereignty  formula with regard to the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands, as well as the surrounding maritime areas, as agreed by both Governments in paragraph 2 of the Joint Statement of Madrid of 19 October 1989.
