Official Release of the Argentine Foreign Ministry

Information for the Press N°:
006/24

The Argentine Republic reaffirms its steadfast commitment to the defence of democracy, respect for human rights, and the rule of law, which are key pillars for peaceful coexistence among nations and human dignity.

In this context, Argentina reiterates its recognition of Mr. Edmundo González Urrutia as the legitimate President-elect of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, representing the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people, which has been unequivocally expressed at the election.

The Argentine Government strongly condemns the regime of Nicolás Maduro, who has illegitimately remained in power through the use of military forces and paramilitary groups, while systematically subjecting his people to torture, persecution and repression. Maduro and his accomplices have proven themselves to be serial perpetrators of human rights violations and responsible for heinous crimes that have devastated the Venezuelan people, caused a deep divide in society and triggered an unprecedented exodus.

The situation of Argentine gendarme Nahuel Gallo, who remains illegally detained under inhumane conditions, is further proof of Maduro regime’s disregard for human life and dignity. The arbitrary detention of Gallo, which constitutes a clear case of forced disappearance, shows the brutal nature of a regime that subdues innocent persons and turns their suffering into an instrument for intimidation. This case also underscores Maduro’s character as a relentless deceiver, who distorts facts to hide his crimes and perpetuate a false narrative before the international community.

It should be noted that Maduro’s regime has increased the detention of foreign nationals as a strategy to exert pressure on other governments. According to recent reports, over 120 citizens of various nationalities have been detained based on unfounded accusations of destabilizing activities.

The Argentine Republic will strengthen and elaborate on the complaint it filed against Nicolás Maduro, providing international organizations with extensive evidence showing the scale of the crimes committed. We will not rest until Maduro and his accomplices are brought before international courts to answer for their actions.

We firmly believe that only through justice and a sentence against those who have acted despicably will the Venezuelan people be able to find peace, security, and hope for a democratic future.

Argentina reiterates its unwavering support for the Venezuelan people and will continue to work with the international community to restore freedom, dignity, and peace in Venezuela.
