Today, Argentina submitted an amicus curiae brief before the U.S. Supreme Court requesting it to admit the case of Víctor Hugo Saldaño, an Argentine citizen sentenced to death in Texas 22 years ago.
Argentina's amicus brief is supported by 13 Latin American countries (Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador).
Furthermore, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) endorsed the amicus brief through a note forwarded to Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie. In said note, the Commission notes that the brief reflects the decisions and conclusions adopted by the IACHR in the case "Víctor Saldaño vs. United States," and supported the submission before the U.S. Supreme Court with a view to the fulfilment of the recommendations made by the organization.
Argentina's submission adds to the various actions undertaken by our country to defend the Argentine citizen for over 20 years and is in line with Argentina's position against the death penalty.
