Foreign Minister Felipe Solá met today with the cohead of the Prosecution Office for Human Trafficking and Exploitation (PROTEX), Marcelo Colombo, to discuss the Sixth Meeting of National Authorities on Human Trafficking (TDP) within the Organization of American States, to be held virtually on 13 and 14 May under Argentina’s Presidency.
During the meeting, held at the Foreign Ministry’s offices, the Minister and the PROTEX official discussed the challenges in this field and the coming event, which will be attended by several experts on the subject.
“We hope that the Meeting of National Authorities will serve to strengthen communication ties and promote greater cooperation between the authorities in charge of preventing and fighting human trafficking, as well as helping and protecting the victims and survivors,” Solá stated.
The Meeting of National Authorities on Human Trafficking is a political decision-making forum engaged in preventing and fighting this crime, as well as assisting and protecting victims. Although the Sixth Meeting was scheduled to take place in 2020, it had to be postponed due to the pandemic. Meetings are held every two years under the presidency of an OAS Member State —this year, the Argentine Republic.
PROTEX was created in 2013 to continue the work of the Kidnappings and Human Trafficking Assistance Unit (UFASE) and thus deal with the serious issue of human trafficking and exploitation. Prosecutors Colombo and María Alejandra Mángano are currently the coheads of PROTEX.
