The Governments of the Argentine Republic and the Republic of Chile successfully concluded the third round of joint inspections of foreign stations under the Antarctic Treaty.
As they did in 2016 and 2017, both countries formed an interdisciplinary team to undertake this joint activity provided for under the Antarctic Treaty and its Protocol on Environmental Protection. This joint procedure allows for the streamlining of resources to exercise more frequently one of the main powers granted by the Treaty, in order to verify compliance with the obligations assumed by the Consultative Parties, especially those related to the protection of Antarctica's environment.
On 19-26 February, this time with Chilean logistics, four foreign stations were inspected in the Antarctic Peninsula: Palmer (USA), Vernadsky (Ukraine), Port Lockroy (United Kingdom) and St. Kliment Ohridski (Bulgaria). On this occasion, guest observers from the Oriental Republic of Uruguay and the Republic of Korea also participated.
The Governments of the Argentine Republic and the Republic of Chile welcome the closing of a new round of inspections that enables the strengthening of bilateral cooperation and the consolidation of the strategic relationship between the two countries with regard to Antarctica, while also strengthening the Antarctic Treaty System and the role played by both countries.
