The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has informed the UN General Assembly of his decision to nominate the former President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Argentina welcomes the nomination of former President Bachelet, who, in view of her vast professional career both at the national and international levels, will make a valuable contribution that will enhance the important work of the Office of the High Commissioner.
The Secretary-General's decision recognizes former President Bachelet's work in favour of the promotion and protection of human rights in her country and in the region, as well as for gender equality and the empowerment of women.
The Argentine Republic wishes to convey its appreciation for Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein's work heading the Office of the High Commissioner and renews its long-standing commitment to the promotion and defence of human rights worldwide.
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is the main office of the United Nations responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide and spearheading global efforts in that field.
