Following Joe Biden’s inauguration as president, Argentine Foreign Ministry officials met with the Chargé d'affaires of the US embassy, MaryKay Carlson, to discuss some of the main issues on the wide-ranging bilateral agenda.
The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Pablo Tettamanti, and the Chief of the Private Office of the Foreign Ministry, Guillermo Justo Chaves, noted that Argentina welcomes the return of the United States to the Paris Accord and its renewed multilateral commitment to combat climate change.
Against the backdrop of the health, social and economic challenges posed by the pandemic, the officials also conveyed Argentina’s satisfaction at the announcement that the United States will remain a member of the World Health Organization and will join the Covax system as a mechanism for equal access to the COVID-19 vaccine.
In line with President Alberto Fernandez’ remarks in his recent letter to his counterpart, Joe Biden, and in the letter sent by Foreign Minister Felipe Solá to Antony Blinken, after the latter’s confirmation as Secretary of State by the US Senate, the Argentine Foreign Ministry officials stressed that Argentina wishes to advance with the new US administration a shared, creative and innovative working agenda that is forward-looking and relies on such common values as multilateralism, respect for human rights, the preservation of our “common home” as far as the environment is concerned, and democracy, with a strong focus on integral human development.
