Chile reiterated its support for Argentina's legitimate rights over the Malvinas

Chilean President Sebastián Piñera reaffirmed his government's support for Argentina's legitimate sovereign rights over the Malvinas, South Georgias, and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas and urged that negotiations between Argentina and the United Kingdom be resumed, in compliance with the resolutions of the United Nations and other international forums.

The Chilean President's Declarations took place within the framework of the State visit to Chile headed by President Alberto Fernández and the adoption of a Joint Declaration by the two leaders, signed on January 26.

The Joint Declaration also reiterates that the adoption of unilateral measures for the exploitation of renewable and non-renewable natural resources in the disputed area is incompatible with what was agreed in the United Nations and recognizes the right of our country to take legal action, in compliance with treaties in force and international law, against unauthorized activities in the mentioned area.

For his part, President Alberto Fernández expressed Argentina's gratitude for the traditional support of the Chilean government in the Malvinas Question.
