Conference on the Malvinas Question in the framework of the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile

On June 15th, the Secretary for the Malvinas Islands, Antarctica and the South Atlantic, Daniel Filmus, gave the conference "Historical, legal and current aspects of the 'Malvinas Question', within the framework of the Argentine Chair of the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile (IEI).

During the presentation, in which the Argentine Ambassador to Chile, Rafael Bielsa, the Director of the IEI, Dorotea López, and professors Alberto van Klaveren and María José Henríquez also participated, a review was made of the main historical and legal arguments that support Argentina’s position in the Malvinas Question.

Filmus thanked “Chile's valuable support to the Malvinas Cause” and stressed that “Argentina will continue to express its will to negotiate as a true State policy, until a definitive solution to this sovereignty dispute is achieved, in the terms indicated by the United Nations and in accordance with the principles of International Law ”.

For her part, the IEI Director stressed that the conference was an excellent occasion to delve into Argentine foreign policy on a subject of singular importance for both countries. Dr. Van Klaveren commented on Filmus’ presentation and remarked that the Chilean position on this issue translates into a very important support for the Malvinas Cause, expressed in United Nations resolutions and, especially, in Chile’s work in the Special Committee on Decolonization, as a founding member and co-sponsor of the resolution on the Malvinas Question.

The conference ended with a round of Q&A, in which students and authorities of the Chilean institution spoke with Ambassador Filmus about historical and current aspects related to the Malvinas Question.
