The National Commission for the Outer Limit of the Continental Shelf (COPLA), dependent on the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs, began to dictate a training course on the Demarcation of the Outer Limit of the Continental Shelf, within the framework of UNESCO.
It is the first course taught at the UNESCO Regional Specialized Center for Ocean Sciences, established in Argentina, within the Ocean Teacher Global Academy (OTGA) program of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO).
The objective of the course, which began on May 10, is to provide participants with the necessary knowledge to proceed with the establishment of the outer limit of the continental shelf, transmitting the experience of Argentina in the development of a State policy of more than 20 years.
During the course, the different stages will be considered: the analysis of article 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the elaboration of a work plan, the acquisition, processing and interpretation of the data, the determination of the points of the outer limit, its presentation before the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) and participation in the analysis and recommendations stage.
The training will last 20 hours distributed in five sessions, synchronous and asynchronous, which will include theoretical classes, practical exercises, group work and evaluations. The knowledge acquired in the course will be useful both for the eventual participation in a team involved in the establishment of the outer limit of a coastal country, as well as for research and teaching on related topics.
The proposal was very well received by the Latin American community, with more than 100 people interested from different countries in America, including Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay, Honduras, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala, Panama, Nicaragua and Chile.
This instrument of cooperation shows the recognition of the Argentine Republic as a source of capacities and experiences in the matter, and provides an excellent opportunity to disseminate Argentine ocean policy.
