Energetic protest by Argentina over British military exercises in the Malvinas Islands

As a result of the holding of naval, air and military maneuvers in Argentine territory illegitimately occupied by the United Kingdom that constitute an unjustified show of force and a violation of the recommendations of the United Nations and other international organizations.

The Argentine Government has learned that during the month of July the United Kingdom has once again held military exercises in the Malvinas Islands, involving the patrol ship HMS Forth, the British Infantry Company A, the A400M aircraft, and the Typhoons of the RAF 1435 Flight, which are part of the military deployment of the United Kingdom's illegal occupation in the Malvinas Islands.

Secretary of the Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic, Daniel Filmus, assured that “the British exercises violate all the recommendations approved by the United Nations and by the agreements of the countries with coasts in the South Atlantic. Argentina reiterates the call to the United Kingdom to avoid holding military actions in the region and to resume diplomatic sovereignty negotiations over the Islands in the terms set out by UN Resolution 2065”.

The Argentine Republic, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, rejects in the strongest terms the holding of these naval, air and military maneuvers in Argentine territory illegitimately occupied by the United Kingdom, which constitute an unjustified show of force and a deliberate disregard for the calls of the numerous resolutions of the United Nations and other international organizations, which urge both Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume negotiations, in order to find a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute that involves both countries in the Question of the Malvinas Islands.

The Argentine Government will continue to maintain its rejection of the British military presence in the South Atlantic, striving for international support in this regard, which has already been manifested in numerous regional bodies, under the premise that such presence is contrary to the commitment of the region to the search for a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute.

In particular, the persistence of the United Kingdom in conducting military exercises in the South Atlantic specifically contravenes resolution 31/49 of the United Nations General Assembly, which urges both parties (Argentina and the United Kingdom) to refrain from introducing unilateral modifications in the situation while the Malvinas Islands are going through the negotiation process recommended by the UN.

The military presence also contradicts resolution 41/11 of the General Assembly (Zone of Peace and Cooperation in the South Atlantic) which, among other provisions, exhorts the states of all other regions, especially the militarily important states, to scrupulously respect the South Atlantic region as a zone of peace and cooperation, in particular through the reduction and eventual elimination of their military presence in that region.
