Meeting with UN Secretary General on the Malvinas Question

At the beginning of his official agenda in New York, where he participated in the United Nations (UN) Decolonization Committee’s session on the Malvinas Question, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Felipe Solá, met with the Secretary-General of the Organization, António Guterres, who was asked to intercede with the United Kingdom to resume talks on the sovereignty of the islands.

During the meeting, Solá also conveyed to Guterres the Argentine government's commitment to solidarity multilateralism, in the critical context of COVID 19, and reiterated the Argentine position of supporting a liberalization of patent rights on vaccines and essential medical supplies to fight against the pandemic.

With regards to the session on Thursday 24th, the Foreign Minister expressed the renewal of Argentine firm support to the mission of good offices entrusted by the General Assembly to the Secretary-General, whose objective is to get Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume sovereignty negotiations on the Malvinas Question, in accordance with the mandate established and reiterated in resolutions of that Assembly and of its Special Committee on Decolonization.

Solá and Guterres also discussed the preparatory process for the Food Systems Summit and the Member State Dialogues for Argentina, held last May, which brought together a large number of actors and entities from the public and private sectors and which represents a fundamental contribution of our country to the debates of the international community around the theme "Strengthening Food Systems for Sustainable Development".

They also discussed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, considered one of the most ambitious development projects at the United Nations, and its economic, social and environmental objectives for the coming years, which Argentina is fully committed to meet.

At the meeting, Solá was accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Guillermo Justo Chaves; the Secretary of the Malvinas Islands, Antarctica and the South Atlantic, Daniel Filmus; and the Argentine Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador María del Carmen Squeff.
