In the framework of its 72nd Ordinary Session, the Mercosur Parliament (Parlasur) adopted on December 14th a new declaration in “support of the sovereign rights of Argentina over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas that are part of its national territory”.
Along the same lines, and on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of UN Resolution 2065, the Parlasur reiterated its support for the compliance with that declaration, that establishes the obligation to resume negotiations to find a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute between our country and the United Kingdom, systematically ignored by the latter. It also recalled that compliance with United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2065 (XX) is permanently requested by the UN Special Committee on Decolonization.
Moreover, the declaration “condemns the militarization and the holding of military exercises on the Malvinas Islands, which pose a threat to peace and cooperation in the South Atlantic”.
The Parlasur also rejected all the actions of economic exploitation that imply the depredation of natural resources. “In this way, the United Kingdom violates United Nations General Assembly Resolution 31/49”, which calls upon the parties to refrain from taking unilateral actions that imply introducing unilateral changes in the situation while the dispute is pending resolution.
On December 16th, another important declaration was made in the framework of the 57th Summit of Presidents of Mercosur and Associate States that once again expressed a strong support for Argentina's sovereign rights over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas that are part of our country.
These expressions are a clear sign that this claim is not only an Argentine cause, but also a regional and global one. Resolutions adopted this year by OAS, CELAC, SICA and G77 and China, among other multilateral organizations, show that the international community no longer tolerates colonial situations in the 21st century. All of them urgently call upon the United Kingdom to resume bilateral negotiations to find a definite solution to the sovereignty dispute.
A year ago, in his inauguration speech before the Legislative Assembly, President Alberto Fernández promised to place the Malvinas Cause as a matter of State and called upon all the political and social forces to this enormous task, aimed at generating the conditions that allow to exercise sovereignty over the Islands again. The National Government has carried out each of the proposals announced at the beginning of its administration and will continue working tirelessly, with the support of all of Latin America, so that the Argentine flag can once again be raised throughout the national territory.
