The National Council of Affairs Relative to the Malvinas Islands, composed of representatives of the main political parties, academia, Malvinas veterans and the province of Tierra del Fuego, created at the request of a bill presented by President Alberto Fernández, and approved unanimously in the National Congress, is working on the design of State policies.
This body, created in 2020 and headed by the President himself, held three meetings since its formal constitution in November, when technical reports on different matters related to the archipelago were presented and lines of action were drawn. Several interdisciplinary commissions were set up with the goal of designing proposals to strengthen the claim of the exercise of sovereignty over the islands of the South Atlantic, within the framework of the Malvinas Cause, which is a State policy
In line with the impulse that the National Government gave to the Malvinas Question from the beginning of its administration, the Council made progress in setting up four commissions that will contribute to supporting Argentina's position in multilateral forums, based on geographical, environmental, historical, legal and political aspects.
During the December 2, 9 and 21 meetings of the Council, also composed of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Felipe Solá and the Secretary of Malvinas, Antarctica and South Atlantic of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Daniel Filmus, reports commissioned to parliamentarians, academics and jurists of the Council, related to legal issues, defense, the position of the Malvinas after Brexit, the role of the United Nations and the role of the National Congress in the dispute, among others, were analyzed
Reports were presented by the specialist in International Law, Marcelo Kohen; the former head of the Argentine Army and Malvinas War veteran, Martin Balza; the sociologist and master's degree in International Relations, Juan Gabriel Tokatlian; the Conicet researcher and former national deputy, Alcira Argumedo; and the former foreign minister and radical leader, Susana Ruiz Cerruti. The former Minister of Foreign Affairs and head of the Senate's Foreign Relations Commission, Jorge Taiana; the specialist in International Law and legislator of Parlasur, Armando Abruza; the radical deputy Facundo Suárez Lastra and the specialist in International Law and general coordinator of the National Commission for the Outer Limit of the Continental Shelf (Copla), Frida Armas Pfirter.
During its last meeting, on December 21, the Council resolved to form commissions on the following axes: actions before multilateral organizations, strategy in the Argentina-United Kingdom bilateral relationship, the situation of the Malvinas Islands and the dissemination, communication and preparation of materials aimed at spreading the Argentine claim inside and outside the country.
The President launched the Council last November 6, during the celebration of the bicentennial of the first raising of the Argentine flag in Malvinas . The Council represents a historic advance for Argentina that allows the design of medium and long-term State policies to consolidate the exercise of sovereignty over Malvinas.
