30th anniversary of the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone

Thursday, 27 October 2016
Information for the Press N°:
367/16

On the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the adoption of the "Declaration of a zone of peace and co-operation in the South Atlantic" for the region situated between Africa and South America by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/41/11 on 27 October, the Argentine Republic reaffirms its commitment to the purposes and objectives of such Declaration.

The South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone is the first South America-Africa forum that includes South Atlantic coastal States: Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Namibia, Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Togo.

As oceans become increasingly important in international relations and more initiatives are proposed for their peaceful, sustainable use, the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone represents a pioneering action in the framework of international law principles and provisions applicable to maritime areas.

In this context, the Argentine Republic undertakes a commitment, in line with said Declaration, to continue to promote—together with other member States and within the framework of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity principles—greater regional cooperation, among other aspects, for economic and social development, environmental protection, preservation of living resources, and peace and security in the Zone. To such end, the Argentine Government hopes that the 8th Ministerial Meeting of the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone may be held as soon as possible.
