Today, in the presence of the Governor of San Juan Province, Sergio Uñac, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie and Chilean Ambassador José Antonio Viera-Gallo signed an Agreement to withdraw the 50 million tonnes of waste materials deposited in Argentine territory by the Chilean mining company Los Pelambres.
The Agreement establishes that the plan to withdraw the dump and the mitigation works are to be carried out in agreement with the instructions of Argentine Federal Court No. 2 in and for San Juan, and that within such framework all necessary actions will be coordinated so that Los Pelambres mine can start carrying out the works on 15 December.
This Agreement is the result of joint work by the Argentine Foreign Ministry, the Argentine Ministry of Energy and Mining, the Argentine Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the Province of San Juan and the Chilean Foreign Ministry.
The countries have thus reached a satisfactory solution to the issue for which Argentina had been submitting requests to the Chilean government since 2011.
