259/17

In the context of the official visit to Argentina by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Australia, Julie Bishop, who was received today at the Palacio San Martín by Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Argentine Ministry of Education and Sports and the Australian Department of Education and Training on cooperation in the field of education, research, and technical and professional training.

This Memorandum lays the foundation for cooperation between the two countries on educational issues and is the only bilateral agreement in force on this subject.

The document was signed by the Minister of Education and Sports of the Argentine Republic, Esteban Bullrich, and Foreign Minister Bishop, and seeks to enhance and promote measures towards the development of shared activities on the basis of reciprocity and mutual benefit.

The execution of this Memorandum represents a commitment to advance jointly on educational issues, including research and technical and professional training, areas which ultimately contribute to the development and creation of new and sustainable forms of employment, a matter of enduring concern for the Argentine Government which is part of our country’s foreign policy agenda.

In this way, cooperation will be fostered through bilateral consultations, student and academic exchanges, the dissemination of international scholarships and the organization of training seminars and meetings.

In addition, Foreign Minister Faurie and his counterpart, Julie Bishop, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Argentina and Australia on the establishment of a bilateral consultations mechanism to strengthen the historical bonds between the two nations and broaden the bonds shared on political, cultural, educational, economic, trade, investment and technological issues, among others, as well as to exchange views on regional and international matters of mutual interest and on emerging issues on the global agenda.
