“MERCOSUR must serve as a platform for boosting trade and to that end we must remove trade barriers and facilitate investment," the Secretary for International Economic Relations of the Argentine Foreign Ministry, Horacio Reyser, stated this afternoon in Brasilia before a group of leading representatives of the Brazilian private sector gathered at a meeting of the Federation of Argentine Chambers of Commerce in Brazil.

During the meeting, which is being held at the Argentine Embassy in Brazil until tomorrow, Reyser underscored that "this year we amended the bilateral agreement with Brazil in order to remove double taxation. This amendment will help expand and facilitate bilateral trade and investment."

The Argentine Secretary for International Economic Relations further stated that "Argentine exports of knowledge-based services have great potential in the Brazilian market" and that: "We must also work to create more and better opportunities to export our flagship goods and the output of regional economies."

During these two days, Argentina will present to Brazilian businesspeople its business environment and economic promotion plan, with a view to working jointly with the Consulates. Argentina currently has a new network composed of 13 Chambers of Commerce located in different states (Parana, Santa Catarina, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais, San Pablo, Salvador de Bahía, Pernambuco, Ceara, Paraiba, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Goias), made possible by the work of the Argentine Embassy in coordination with the Consulates and with the support of the private sector.

Each Chamber is made up of businesspeople and professionals, Brazilian federations of commerce, industry and agriculture, and the governments of each state. Their aim is to promote transport, storage and distribution solutions, so as to diversify the opportunities for Argentine SMEs all across the territory of Brazil. In January 2016, there were only two Argentine Chambers of Commerce in Brazil: one in San Pablo and another one in Rio de Janeiro.

"We are working to find new markets and remove barriers, as Argentina now has a long-term ambition to expand globally," Reyser explained in Brazilia. "Hosting the MC11, chairing the G20, and hosting the Expo 2023 clearly reflect that ambition."

"Smart insertion means regarding integration not only in terms of global value chains, but also in terms of global agricultural chains, taking into consideration the characteristics of Argentina's economy," he stated.
