The 29th Meeting of the Argentina - Chile Standing Security Committee (COMPERSEG) was held yesterday in Santiago de Chile at the level of Deputy Ministers.
The meeting was held at the Chilean Foreign Ministry, chaired by the Deputy Foreign Minister, Daniel Raimondi, and the Secretary for Strategy and Military Affairs, Horacio Chighizola, on behalf of Argentina; and by the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Alfonso Silva, and the Undersecretary for Defence, Cristian de la Maza, on behalf of Chile.
Also in attendance were Ambassadors José Octavio Bordón and Sergio Urrejola.
Called by Presidents Sebastián Piñera and Mauricio Macri on the occasion of the Official Visit to Buenos Aires by President Piñera on 25-26 April, COMPERSEG has been holding meetings since 1995 and is a key mechanism of the bilateral relationship for confidence building in defence and international security matters between the two countries.
At the meeting, participants exchanged views on the regional situation, including UNASUR and the South American Defense Council, and reviewed the state of cooperation in Antarctic logistics, risk management, disasters and humanitarian assistance, science and technology and gender policies and the Armed Forces. Special attention was drawn to assessing prospects for the participation of the two countries in Peace-keeping Operations and the Southern Cross Combined Joint Peace-keeping Force.
During the plenary meeting, the Deputy Ministers created a Cyberdefence Working Group, evidencing the high level of trust and cooperation between the two countries.
This meeting was held in preparation for the Ministers' Meeting, to be held in August within the framework of the 2+2 Mechanism on the occasion of the Binational Ministers' Meeting.
