Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie met this morning with his counterpart from the German Federal Republic, Heiko Maas, who is participating at the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting being held since yesterday at the Palacio San Martín.
Faurie and Maas underscored the intensive work being carried out by the two countries for over a year concerning the G20, since Germany handed over the G20 Presidency to Argentina in late 2017. The Ministers agreed on the importance of multilateralism and the need to continue working towards rules-based, fair and balanced international trade, with benefits for all countries. They also addressed Argentina's OECD membership bid.
Maas reiterated the support of Angela Merkel's government for the economic reforms pursued by President Mauricio Macri and for Argentina's "sovereign decision" to initiate talks with the IMF, in addition to underscoring that Argentina is an important partner for Germany. The Ministers further addressed the state of the Mercosur-EU negotiation and the investigation conducted by the European Commission into the alleged subsidies on Argentina's biodiesel.
The Argentine Foreign Minister underscored the cooperation between the two countries at global fora and mechanisms, as well as the progress made in this new stage of the bilateral relationship, evidenced by Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to Argentina in 2017.
As regards the economic relationship, the Ministers addressed possibilities for increased trade and investment.
