The 5th Plenary Meeting of the International Partnership for Nuclear Disarmament Verification (IPNDV) was held from 29 November to 1 December at the Palacio San Martín.
The IPNDV is an initiative launched in 2015 by the United States Government and the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), with a view to addressing the complex challenges involved in the verification of nuclear disarmament, through a constructive dialogue between countries with and without nuclear weapons, thus ensuring the transparency and guarantees that every multilaterally negotiated nuclear disarmament process should have.
The Buenos Aires Plenary marked the conclusion of Phase I of the Partnership's work, which focused on the nuclear warhead dismantlement process, and served as an opportunity to launch Phase II, which aims at covering a wider range of the nuclear weapons dismantlement cycle.
The plenary meeting was attended by delegations from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the European Union, the Holy See, the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Turkey.
The Deputy Foreign Minister, Ambassador Daniel Raimondi, delivered the opening speech and underscored Argentina's commitment to nuclear disarmament. In this regard, he underscored the importance of initiatives like the IPNDV, as they facilitate trust-building among the members of the international community and serve as concrete steps towards nuclear disarmament in a verifiable, transparent and irreversible manner.
Argentina believes that these efforts, which facilitate mutual understanding and contribute to technical capacity building among Partner nations, are innovative mechanisms that can contribute to the common goal of a nuclear weapon-free world.
