Economic Cooperation Agreement signed

The 3rd Political Consultations Meeting between Argentina and Lithuania took place today at the Palacio San Martín, with the delegations of the two countries headed by their respective Deputy Foreign Ministers, Ambassador Daniel Raimondi on behalf of Argentina and Ambassador Darius Skusevicius on behalf of Lithuania.

Bilateral relations between the two nations were established in 1921 and, after Lithuania regained its independence in 1991, Argentina was the first Latin American country and one of the first ten countries in the world to recognize the restoration of the State of Lithuania.

Since December 2015, the two governments have been strengthening cooperation ties, especially in the economic-trade field.  These stronger ties were reflected in the 2016 meeting between President Macri and President Dalia Grybauskaite.

The presence of a Lithuanian community in Argentina dates back to the beginnings of the 20th century and it is estimated that approximately 30 thousand Lithuanians came to Argentina, mainly during the period between the two World Wars.

On the occasion of the Political Consultations Meeting, the two Deputy Foreign Ministers signed an Economic Cooperation Agreement and discussed several initiatives in the fields of human rights, consular facilities for nationals of the two countries, judicial cooperation and common positions at international fora, as well as investment and bilateral trade.
