By invitation of the President of the Argentine Republic, Mauricio Macri, the President of the Republic of Peru, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, made a Working Visit to the City of Buenos Aires on 3 November 2017.
Both Presidents reviewed all the items on the bilateral, regional and global agendas, confirming a high level of agreement and, in that regard:
Agreed to give new impetus to bilateral relations through the Agreement on Strategic Partnership, Complementarity and Cooperation, signed on 22 March 2010, and undertook a commitment to hold meetings of the main bilateral mechanisms, as well as business meetings, in 2018.
Agreed to strengthen cooperation in the field of defence, for which the 7th Meeting of the Permanent Coordination Committee on Security and Defence Matters (COPERSE) will be held in 2018. Argentina offered its maintenance services for the Peruvian Hercules C-130 aircraft fleet and expressed its interest in participating in future bidding processes for the acquisition of radars and related technologies.
Highlighted the importance of continuing to join efforts in the field of disaster risk reduction and humanitarian assistance, and signed the Agreement on cooperation in the field of disasters between both governments.
Acknowledged that Argentina and Peru are strategic partners in the fight against organized transnational crime, and agreed to continue working on the exchange of information in order to prevent and combat this scourge.
Signed the Agreement on Cooperation in the fight against illicit drug trafficking and organized transnational crime, as well as the Bilateral Agreement on Prevention, Investigation and Punishment of Human Trafficking and on Assistance to and Protection of its Victims.
Underscored the need to boost dynamic, free-flowing and unrestricted trade that creates stable and predictable conditions for trade operators, in order to diversify, expand and consolidate trade flows between both countries. Similarly, they highlighted their agreement to work on broadening the scope of the disciplines provided for in Economic Complementarity Agreement No. 58 during the first quarter of 2018.
Agreed on the importance of continuing to work on sanitary and phytosanitary matters in order to enable access of new agro-industrial products to the respective markets, as well as to improve the terms of access of products already on the market. In this regard, they highlighted the recent exchange of lists of priority products.
Agreed to promote dialogue between MERCOSUR and the Pacific Alliance, by carrying out actions leading to the fulfilment of the Roadmap designed by both fora.
Underscored the contribution of their migrant communities to the social, economic and cultural development of both countries, and agreed to continue their efforts to foster greater integration between those communities.
Reaffirmed the importance of the Bicentenary of Peruvian Independence in 2021, and agreed to outline a programme of cultural and educational activities for the anniversary celebrations. In addition, they highlighted the signature of agreements in various fields of culture and education. The Republic of Peru thanked the Argentine Republic for its valuable contribution to the recovery and repatriation of 4,129 pre-Hispanic objects belonging to Peru.
Highlighted the work carried out by the Lima Group for the full restoration of democracy in Venezuela, and agreed to strengthen bilateral dialogue and coordination in matters pertaining to the region.
President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski wished the Argentine Republic success as host of the upcoming Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization, and pledged Peru's support in reaffirming a rules-based, open and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system.
The President of Peru also invited President Mauricio Macri to visit Peru during the second half of 2018.
President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski reiterated Peru's support for the legitimate sovereignty rights of the Argentine Republic over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas, and underscored the need for the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom to resume negotiations in order to find a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute as soon as possible. President Macri thanked Peru for its historical support in such an important issue for the Argentine Republic.
At the end of his visit, the President of Peru expressed his gratitude for the hospitality extended by the President of the Argentine Republic to the Peruvian delegation.
