This morning, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie and Security Minister Patricia Bullrich held a working meeting at the Palacio San Martín with the Ambassadors of Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and the Minister-Counsellor of the Embassy of Bolivia, in order to foster a series of concrete measures -proposed by Argentina- to fight against illicit traffic in drugs and psychotropic substances in the Parana-Paraguay Waterway.

The exponential growth of the Waterway, which is expected to have experienced an increase in cargo traffic from 20 to 50 million tonnes by mid-2020, emphasizes the need to coordinate security actions to guarantee the regular conduct of navigation and trade.

In that vein, the five countries agreed to hold a second meeting in Buenos Aires, which is to be attended by representatives of the Security Agencies of the five countries, with a view to addressing operational issues.

This initiative reaffirms Argentina's commitment to the fight against drug trafficking and the willingness of the five member countries of the Waterway to materialize joint efforts through the adoption of measures to combat this scourge more effectively.
