Today, Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra held her first work meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, in Bonn, Germany. During their talk, progress was made on defining the details of the upcoming presidential meeting between Mauricio Macri and Donald Trump, following the invitation extended by the U.S. President during a phone call between both heads of state yesterday.
“We have confirmed interest in advancing our agenda and we believe it should be enhanced. Therefore, the idea of both presidents meeting as soon as possible is of great importance to us,” Minister Malcorra summarized in her statements to the German press.
“It is evident that there is a broad interpretation around the world of what is happening in the United States. Many of the announced measures have not yet translated into definite policies, which creates an environment of expectancy worldwide. We always say that transitions have an impact and we want that transition to be as brief as possible,” she said.
“The situation between Mexico and the U.S. creates opportunities. We have a real chance to present our region to the rest of the world, including the United States in a coordinated fashion,” she added.
Minister Malcorra also referred to the planned boost to trade agreement negotiations between Mercosur and the European Union. “It is crucial to show the world that both blocs ratify their interest in integration. There is an abundance of opportunities. We have the chance to establish closer commercial relations and consolidate a twenty-first century agreement which reaffirms our historical bonds,” she assured.
Today, Minister Malcorra attended the first session of the G-20 Foreign Ministers Meeting, held in Bonn, Germany. As part of her work agenda, she met with her German counterpart, Sigmar Gabriel.
At the Ministers Meeting in Bonn, discussion is underway on the United Nations 2030 Agenda, a plan of action to eliminate extreme poverty and inequality. Further issues to be discussed at the meeting are conflict prevention and peace consolidation in civil war zones, especially as regards the situation in Africa.
In 2018, Argentina will host the G-20 summit and preside over the bloc during that year.
As of tomorrow, Minister Malcorra will also attend the 53rd Security Conference to be held in Munich.
