Today, Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra and Minister of Production Francisco Cabrera chaired the First Council Meeting under the United States-Argentina Trade and Investment Framework Agreement, signed on the occasion of President Barack Obama's official visit to Argentina in March.
The United States Delegation was led by US Trade Representative Ambassador Michael Froman, with the presence of US Ambassador to Argentina, Mr. Noah Mamet.
The Ministerial meeting was preceded by a preparatory technical meeting held in Buenos Aires in October 2016.
Argentina and the United States discussed a wide array of trade and investment issues.
Among them was Argentina's re-entry into the Generalized System of Preferences—from which it was suspended in 2012—and progress as regards entry into the US market of lemons and other products in which Argentina has an interest, such as citrus fruits and beef, which is expected to take place soon.
Entry of products of interest to the US into Argentina's market was also considered.
In addition, information was exchanged on each country's respective ongoing international trade negotiations.
The discussions addressed bilateral cooperation on a variety of fields and subjects, such as agricultural biotechnology and coincident interests in multilateral economic organizations.
The United States congratulated Argentina on its appointment as host of the next World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference, which will take place in Buenos Aires in December 2017.
Both Parties agreed to set up an Innovation and Creativity Forum for Economic Development to exchange best practices in these fields and for productive and economic development.
The next Ministerial Council meeting under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement is expected to take place in Washington in 2017.
