Today, Foreign Minister Faurie received the Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which announced that the expert team in charge of identifying the remains of the unidentified Argentine soldiers buried in Darwin Cemetery completed its fieldwork on 7 August and informed Faurie of the results of the forensic Mission.
The Delegation was comprised of the Head of the Humanitarian Project Plan, Laurent Corbaz; the ICRC Regional Delegate for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay, Lorenzo Caraffi; the Legal Adviser to the Regional Delegation, Gabriel Valladares, and the Head of the Mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Buenos Aires, Diego Rojas Coronel.
During the meeting, the ICRC representatives underscored the progress made in the process, especially taking into consideration the good results obtained from the analysis of over half of the DNA samples collected in the Malvinas, which is useful material for the purposes of this identification process.
The Delegation also stated that -once all the samples have been analyzed- the ICRC will meet in Geneva with the experts who were part of the forensic team that worked in Darwin Cemetery so as to draft the final identification reports. Such reports will be finished by the end of this year and will then be submitted to Argentina and the United Kingdom. The Argentine Secretariat for Human Rights will see to the process of delivering the final reports to the families of the Argentine soldiers with the assistance of the ICRC.
Foreign Minister Faurie expressed his gratitude to the International Committee of the Red Cross for its work and for the important role it played in facilitating the current process of identifying the Argentine soldiers buried in Darwin Cemetery.
