237/17

In his first official public appearance, at midday today, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie received the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, and joined him for the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at San Martín Square in honour of the great Argentine Liberator.

Later, at the Argentine Government House, in the context of the meeting between President Mauricio Macri and Prime Minister Costa, Foreign Minister Faurie and his Portuguese counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs Augusto Santos Silva, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on a Working Holiday Programme between the two countries.

The agreement signed will allow young people from both countries between the ages of 18 and 30 to obtain a 12-month visa to extend their stay, whether for tourism or temporary employment. This mechanism will apply both to Portuguese nationals visiting Argentina and to Argentines travelling to Portugal, in order to broaden their work experience and improve their knowledge of language and understanding of culture and society.

The two countries hope in this way to facilitate the mutual issuance of visas and authorizations to young people from both States wishing to holiday or engage in tourism in the territory of the other State, offering them the opportunity to obtain short-term gainful employment to help cover the costs of their stay.
