Today in the city of Buenos Aires, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, Susana Malcorra, and Honduras, Maria Dolores Aguero Lara, held the first meeting of the Mechanism for Consultations on Matters of Mutual Interest between the Argentine Republic and the Republic of Honduras, during which they highlighted the good shape of the bilateral relations and the need to continue working on the development of opportunities to strengthen ties in all the aspects of the bilateral relationship.
In order to continue strengthening the friendship between the two countries, issues of common interest at the bilateral, political, cooperation and trade level were addressed at the meeting. In addition, positions were agreed upon with respect to issues of mutual interest in multilateral and regional integration fora. The Honduran Foreign Minister presented an invitation for the Argentine President, Mauricio Macri to make an official visit to Honduras at a date to be defined. Among other issues discussed were the promotion of human rights, safety and drug trafficking, migration, education and cultural cooperation, and the promotion of trade and investment.
In a spirit of friendship and confidence, the Argentine Foreign Minister thanked Honduras for its traditional and sustained support for the legitimate rights of the Argentine Republic in the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich islands, as well as the surrounding maritime areas. Malcorra also expressed appreciation for the support offered by Honduras at international organizations for the Governments of the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to resume negotiations in order to find a peaceful and definitive solution to the dispute as soon as possible.
As a result of the meeting, and in order to continue maintaining regular bilateral contact, Foreign Minister Malcorra and her Honduran counterpart agreed to hold the second meeting of the Mechanism For Consultation on Matters of Mutual Interest to be held in Tegucigalpa.
In addition, the two Foreign Ministers welcomed the holding in parallel of the second Meeting of the Joint Committee on Technical Cooperation, at which the Cooperation Programme to be implemented during the 2017-2019 period was agreed, and of the Meeting for Consultations on Trade Matters, attended by representatives of the Argentine business sector, and Argentine and Honduran authorities.
Finally, Foreign Minister Maria Dolores Aguero Lara expressed gratitude for the hospitality of the Government of the Argentine Republic during her visit.
