As part of her two-day visit to Mexico which started yesterday, Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra held various bilateral meetings with Mexican authorities and attended the OPANAL Ministerial Conference, in which Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto participated as well.
Malcorra also met with the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Luis Videgaray. During the meeting, both foreign ministers welcomed the renewed momentum of the bilateral relationship and highlighted the progress made on matters of common interest.
Videgaray conveyed his appreciation for the support recently expressed by President Macri to President Peña Nieto with respect to the state of relations between Mexico and the United States and stressed the importance of the relationship between Argentina and Mexico in the current international context.
The Argentine Foreign Minister was also received by the Secretary of Economy, Ildefonso Guajardo. In light of the international situation, they remarked that the ongoing negotiation for expanding and strengthening the bilateral trade agreement (ACE 6) is essential. The ministers also referred to the upcoming WTO Ministerial Conference (Buenos Aires, December 2017) and to the Argentine Presidency of the G20 in 2018. Furthermore, they agreed on the importance of a rapprochement between the Pacific Alliance and Mercosur.
Malcorra also met with the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food, José Calzada Rovirosa. Both government officials expressed common interest in intensifying the exchange of agricultural and food products between both countries. In that respect, Secretary Calzada confirmed the intention to conduct a trade mission with Mexican businesspeople to Argentina, with a view to evaluating the prospects for purchase of food and bovine genetics services. Argentina’s Foreign Minister expressed her genuine willingness to ensure the success of the mission. Furthermore, Malcorra informed Secretary Calzada of the plan to hold the Second Round of Negotiation of ACE 6 in March in Buenos Aires, as well as of the need to begin work on coordinating positions on agricultural matters for the upcoming WTO and G20 high-level meetings.
