Argentina's Accession to OECD Nuclear Energy Agency
Today, the Argentine Republic formally became a full member of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and the Data Bank of the Council of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The NEA is an intergovernmental agency operating under the framework of the OECD that serves as a forum for member countries to share experience and resources so as to develop, through international co-operation, the scientific, technological and legal bases required for a safe, environmentally sound and economical use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The Agency is at the forefront of nuclear science and technology and comprises the countries with the most advanced nuclear energy infrastructures.
Argentina's accession to the Agency, endorsed by the OECD Council last 17 May, was formalized with an official exchange of notes between the Secretary General of the OECD, Ángel Gurría, Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra, and the Minister of Energy and Mining, José Luis Aranguren, in a ceremony held for that purpose in the context of OECD Week 2017.
By entering the NEA, which will formally take place next 1 September, the Argentine Republic becomes the first South American member of the forum, which reflects our country's regional leadership in developing nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
