Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra visited the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between both countries, which established diplomatic relations more than 50 years ago.

Malcorra was welcomed at Algiers airport by Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra, with whom she later held a bilateral meeting. She also met with the Prime Minister, Abdelmalek Sellal.

The Foreign Ministers held the 5th Meeting of Political Consultations, where they reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen existing bonds, especially with regard to nuclear cooperation, and expressed their wish to explore opportunities for the development of new relations in other fields.

Both Ministers agreed on the importance of stability in the Middle East, expressed their concern for the humanitarian consequences of current conflicts in the region, strongly condemned all forms of terrorism and stressed the need to spread a culture of peace.

As regards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, both sides underscored the importance of achieving a just and lasting solution based on the two-State formula that is in accordance with international law and the relevant United Nations resolutions and takes into account the importance of the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative.

The Foreign Minister mentioned and highlighted Algeria’s constant and valuable support for Argentina’s position on the question of the Malvinas Islands in different multilateral fora.

Moreover, both Foreign Ministers underscored the decision made by their governments to honour their independence heroes, General José de San Martín in Algiers and Emir Abd-El-Kader in Buenos Aires, by erecting the respective allegorical busts.

Malcorra held meetings with the Algerian Ministers of Commerce, Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, and of Energy, to discuss specific issues pertaining to each portfolio. Tomorrow, she will meet with the Minister of Industry and Mining.
