Argentine Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra participated today in the opening session of the World Food Programme Executive Board in Rome, together with fifteen ministers from different countries. The session was also attended by Pope Francis as special guest.
The World Food Programme (WFP) is an agency of the United Nations system and the world's largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger.
Malcorra stated that Argentina is deeply involved with the WFP and that it will strengthen its commitment through specific activities, which include economic and other aid and humanitarian assistance provided by White Helmets, and that it will promote greater participation of the private sector. The Foreign Minister stressed Argentina's importance in this field and the role played by White Helmets. She further underscored the decision to receive refugees in Argentina.
The Pope greeted the ministers who attended the event, as well as WFP officials and their families, and gave a strong address on the need to fight against poverty and hunger.
Malcorra met with WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin, who welcomed her and remarked: "This has always been your home". During the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding on South-South and Triangular Cooperation was signed, under which both parties committed to working jointly with third countries.
The Foreign Minister reiterated Argentina's support for the WFP nomination for the Princess of Asturias Award. After the event, Malcorra met with the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianides.
